Long-Term Care Basics |
|
Long-Term Care is a variety of services and supports to meet health or personal care needs over an extended period of time. Most long-term care is non-skilled personal care assistance, such as help performing everyday activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring, and continence. The goal of long-term care is to help maximize your independence and functioning at a time that you are unable to be fully independent.

Long-term care can be provided at home or in an institutional setting. The cost for that care varies across the state, but the 2009 cost of care survey by Genworth Financial gives an average cost for several different types of care in Iowa. The average daily rate for a private room in a nursing home is about $142, or $51,830 per year. The average daily rate for a private room in an assisted living facility is about $83, or $30,384 per year. A licensed home health aide will charge on average about $22 per hour. This means 8 hours per day for 5 days per month would cost you over $10,000 per year. The above information and much more can be found at the National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information website. It was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide information and resources to help you and your family plan for future long-term care needs. The National Clearinghouse has a wealth of information that will help you find answers to many of your questions regarding long-term care.
